Cheap Cycles Cardiff

Gearing up for Bargains at Cardiff’s Cycle Workshop: Bike Recycling Done Well.

Established in 2010 by founder Andrew Burns, Cardiff Cycle Workshop is a non-profit organisation part of Cycle Training Wales (created 2008). Their aim is to provide increased access to cycling, whilst providing and promoting affordable, reliable and quality inspected cycles. The workshop takes in, inspects and re-conditions bikes originally destined for the scrapheap and sells them to the public. Any money they generate is invested back into the enterprise to continue their aims of reducing the barriers to cycling.

Jon Howes, Coordinator for Cardiff’s Cycle Workshop, gave me an insight into their bike recycling enterprise:

  • “We started with a grant from The Big Lottery Fund, working with Cardiff Council collecting bikes from their recycling centres, which is still ongoing today’. The first year we started to repair and sell bikes and get volunteers on board, in 2014 we moved to bigger premises [Gabalfa] from Ely Bridge’.
  • Between 2014-2015 we sold 401 bikes, for this coming year we have already sold 344 bikes, a substantial increase in sales. There’s an appetite for recycled bikes amongst the local population and we are grateful for their support and it looks like its going to be another successful year”.

         On volunteering for the Workshop:

  • “We’re always glad to have volunteers coming in and donating their time and skills, without them it couldn’t work. We’ve currently got about 20 volunteers who come in throughout the week and help us repair the bikes and pick up tips along the way. I would encourage anyone interested in bikes to get involved, we’d love to hear from you”.
